# Monitor metadata fields can now be required at creation

Priority, audience, tags, and data quality dimension have always been optional, which in practice means they're often left blank — and blank metadata is what breaks alert routing, triage ordering, and coverage reporting downstream. Your account can now require any combination of the four, so a monitor can't be saved without them.

Nothing is required until you turn it on. Check the current state with [getRequiredMonitorFields](https://apidocs.getmontecarlo.com/#query-getRequiredMonitorFields) and set it with [updateRequiredMonitorFields](https://apidocs.getmontecarlo.com/#mutation-updateRequiredMonitorFields). Valid values are `PRIORITY`, `AUDIENCE`, `TAGS`, and `DATA_QUALITY_DIMENSION`.
